El volvox es un conjunto de algas microscópicas, que suele crecer formando colonias o cenobios de forma esférica, rodeados por células superficiales biflageladas y unidas entre sí por conexiones citoplasmáticas. En el interior de la colonia existen múltiples oosporas. colonias de células separadas en: -células vegetativas o somaticas,`pequeñas y numerosas -células reproductoras grandes, poco numerosas dispuestas en la periferia del cenobio.
Cada célula esta rodeada por una envuelta mucilaginosacon limites no confluyentes y poligonales.
Durante el desarrollo embrionario hay conexiones citoplasmaticas entre las células.
